Liquid Web First Impression

Two months ago I opened a new VPS account with Liquid Web.

The package I am using was VPS Plan 1 which offers:

  • Virtuozzo VPS
  • CentOS 3
  • AMD Dual Opteron Server
  • 256MB RAM Guaranteed
  • Fully Managed Support
  • Nightly Off-Server Backups
  • Fantastico and XController
  • 20 Gigabytes Storage
  • 200 GB’s Transfer
  • CPanel/WHM
  • 1024MB RAM Burstable
  • 100% Network Uptime SLA
  • 4 IP Addresses
  • InitAdmin Service

Before signing up I had some presales questions. Liquid Web has a 24/7 toll free support number, an email based ticketing system, and customer forums. The few times I called their toll free number my hold times were less then a few minutes, usually only a few seconds. The technicians were knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. I also used their email based support and received a response within an hour.

Once I had all my questions answered I signed up for an account. The signup process was what you would expect. They called to verify my information and a few hours later I received a welcome email with all the information I needed. The welcome email included information about contacting support, DNS, and login information for ssh, VPS control panel, WHM, and CPanel.

Liquid Web’s VPS solutions are fully managed server solutions. The initial setup involves installing the operating system and control panels, upgrading the OS and control panel to the latest versions, and performing custom server hardening. During this time they also setup schedules to automate updating the OS and cpanel. When I logged into the system for first time it was ready to use.

Since I signed up there has been no downtime, the server seems stable and has very light load. I had to open a few support tickets which were promptly responded to and resolved.

My only complaint is they tend to use account passwords for verification. In general passwords should not be stored in clear text or sent over email, which is also in clear text. It’s also not good security to ask for a users password either on the phone or even worse in email.

Overall I’m very satisfied with their service and would recommend them.
